Nangolo Mbumba Sworn in as Namibia's New President Following Hage Geingob's Passing

Namibia has witnessed a significant political transition as Nangolo Mbumba, the former Vice President, was sworn in as the country’s new President following the death of President Hage Geingob. The late President Geingob passed away in the early hours of Sunday while receiving medical treatment in a hospital in Windhoek, marking the end of an era in Namibian politics.

In a swift move to ensure the continuity of governance, Nangolo Mbumba took the oath of office just hours after President Geingob’s demise. Addressing the nation during a quickly arranged swearing-in ceremony at the state house, President Mbumba confirmed that he would not contest in the upcoming elections, scheduled for later this year. “I no go dey around for di elections so make una no panic,” he declared, emphasizing his interim role and setting the stage for a forthcoming electoral process.

During his inaugural speech, President Mbumba paid homage to his predecessor, lauding President Geingob as the “chief architect of the constitution” and commending his leadership for maintaining national calm and stability. He pledged to uphold and continue the legacies of the late president, acknowledging the weight of responsibility that comes with his new role.

In a historic move, President Mbumba announced the appointment of Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the Vice President of Namibia, making her the first female to hold this position in the country’s history. Nandi-Ndaitwah, a seasoned politician and a prominent figure within the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Her appointment is seen as a progressive step for gender representation in Namibian politics and a testament to her significant contributions to the nation’s political landscape.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s political career spans several decades, during which she has held various key positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, among others. Her leadership and dedication to Namibia’s development have been evident through her tenure in different capacities, making her a fitting choice for the vice presidency.

As Namibia navigates this transitional period, the leadership of President Nangolo Mbumba and Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is poised to steer the country towards its next chapter, honoring the legacy of President Geingob and facing the future with resilience and hope.
